Building ownership mindset is a journey that starts with person being “Dependent” on someone else to high level of ownership in four stages. Leaders play a huge role in creating an environment that helps team members to progress on the journey but individual’s mindset also plays a big role in finally reaching that highest level.
Dependent to Contributor
When a person, new to a role or organization becomes more aware of how things work and starts getting engaged with the ecosystem she starts contributing.
The time one takes to move from dependent to contributor depends on the individual’s alignment with the organization/role, understanding and availability of information required and psychologically safe environment that allows for her to ask questions and provide inputs
Contributor to co-owner
The transition from Contributor to co-owner is triggered when the individual starts to connect with the organization/projects purpose, has the autonomy and competence to take the required decisions to achieve the purpose
Co-owner to Owner
Individuals have an increased sense of responsibility and are able to autonomously define goals and make decisions, to achieve results.
